Wire Mesh Thickness and Filter Stack Height Guide
Define what “thickness” refers to before comparing filter quotations or inspection results. Individual wire diameter, fabric thickness, loose stack height and installed assembly height are different characteristics.
Use separate drawing callouts and agreed measurement conditions when these dimensions control fit or acceptance.
Six Dimensions That Should Not Be Interchanged
| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Wire diameter | An individual wire; record both directions where the construction uses different wires. |
| Fabric thickness | The woven material in its specified supply or processed condition, measured by the agreed method. |
| Bonded laminate thickness | The finished bonded medium; identify its construction and inspection locations. |
| Loose stack height | The identified layers in their specified order before installation, under defined measuring conditions. |
| Installed height | The assembly between specified reference surfaces under the approved assembly conditions. |
| Local feature height | A rim, seam, overlap or other feature that may differ from the filtering region. |
For example, a rimmed disc may require one dimension across the media and another across the rim. A correct reading at the rim does not establish the specified media thickness.
State the Material Condition
Record whether the medium is supplied as woven, calendered, bonded or otherwise processed. Calendering uses rollers to reduce fabric to a specified thickness and can affect other mesh properties. Do not adopt a thickness-reduction percentage from an unrelated product as a universal filter rule.
For multilayer media, use the layer structure guide to define construction and order. Then specify the finished thickness separately. A layer count does not establish the final dimensional requirement.
If a process or construction is changed, review the resulting thickness and the other affected media requirements. Achieving a target dimension alone does not demonstrate unchanged filtration performance.
Agree the Measurement Method Before Comparing Results
Where to measure
Mark the media region and any separately controlled rim, seam or overlap. Agree the number and distribution of locations.
How to contact it
Specify the instrument and contact arrangement appropriate to the characteristic, including force or load where it matters.
What state to measure
Identify individual layers, an assembled stack or an installed part, and state the relevant fixture or assembly conditions.
Different contact locations or loading conditions can produce results that are not directly comparable. Record those conditions with the reading. Do not keep squeezing a specimen until it meets the drawing value.
The drawing and tolerance checklist helps identify the reference surfaces and acceptance limits. Select the actual measuring method with the parties responsible for inspection.
Keep Stack Arithmetic Separate from Assembly Acceptance
Adding nominal layer thicknesses can organize a preliminary stack calculation, but it is not an inspection result. State all included components, their tolerances and the relevant condition. Loose layers, joined regions and interfaces must be represented as specified.
Do not apply an assumed compression factor to turn a free-state sum into installed height. Where installed fit matters, define the assembly reference surfaces and the approved assembly conditions used for acceptance.
Seals and retained edges need their own requirements. See the end connection and sealing guide for interface details. This guide does not prescribe clamp torque or a universal seal-compression setting.
Use a Record That Makes the Result Repeatable
- Identify the specimen. Part number, revision, sample or lot and media construction.
- Identify the characteristic. Fabric thickness, stack height, rim height or installed dimension.
- Record the method. Instrument, contacts, locations, force/load if specified and material state.
- Record actual readings. Keep each required result and compare it with the relevant limit.
- Resolve differences. Check that both parties measured the same characteristic under comparable conditions before deciding disposition.
If a reading differs from the requirement, preserve the as-received condition and agree any additional inspection. Rework or a change in test conditions should be recorded rather than used to conceal the original result.
English Drawing Note Template
Characteristic: [fabric thickness / stack height / installed height]. Applies to [part, region and revision] in [material or assembly state]. Measure at [locations] using [instrument/contact arrangement] under [specified force, load or fixture conditions]. Acceptance: [limits and units]. Record individual results and identify any rim, seam or overlap measured separately.
Complete the fields for the actual component. For commercial enquiries, see multilayer filter discs and sintered mesh discs. Attach the dimensional note to the RFQ rather than describing every requirement simply as “overall thickness”.
Mesh Thickness FAQ
No. Wire diameter describes an individual wire. Mesh thickness describes the fabric through its thickness under a defined measurement method and material condition.
No universal calculation is used here. Weave construction, wire dimensions and processing condition matter. Specify the measured or controlled fabric thickness when it affects acceptance.
No. Identify whether a dimension applies to separate layers, an unrestrained stack or the assembled component under specified conditions.
Calendering can change mesh thickness and other properties. A proposed processing change should be reviewed against the approved media requirements rather than treated as a cosmetic substitution.
Only if that is the specified characteristic. Identify the media area, rim, seam or overlap separately and use the locations required by the drawing.
Record the part and revision, material state, measured region, instrument/contact arrangement, applied force or load where relevant, locations, readings and the applicable acceptance limits.
