Custom Sintered Metal Filter Cartridge
A custom sintered metal filter cartridge combines a defined porous metal medium with the required cylindrical geometry, support, seam or bonded structure, end connection and seal interface. Specify whether the medium is sintered woven mesh, metal fiber felt or porous powder—these are not interchangeable product names.
Choose the Sintered Medium First
Sintered wire mesh
Bonded layers of woven mesh can combine filtration, drainage and support functions in a defined laminate.
Sintered metal fiber felt
A bonded fiber network offers a different pore structure and dirt-holding behavior from woven mesh.
Porous metal powder
Sintered powder forms a rigid porous body and should be treated as a separate medium family.
For porous powder products, use the dedicated powder sintered filter page. For flat multilayer mesh parts, see sintered wire mesh filter discs.
Sintered Filter Cartridge Specification Checklist
A micron value and outside diameter are not enough for a quotation-ready cartridge. Include the porous medium, rating definition, complete interface and operating duty.
| RFQ field | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Porous medium | Sintered woven mesh, fiber felt or powder; layer structure if applicable | Defines pore structure, permeability and fabrication route |
| Filtration rating | Micron value plus nominal, absolute or named test method | Creates a comparable retention requirement |
| Geometry | OD, ID, length, wall build and tolerances | Controls fit, effective area and assembly clearance |
| Interfaces | Thread, flange, sanitary end, collar, cap and seal details | Defines mounting, sealing and removal |
| Operating duty | Medium, temperature, differential pressure, flow direction and cleaning | Connects the cartridge design to actual service |
End Connections and Seal Interfaces
Common drawing-defined interfaces include male or female threads, sanitary-style clamp ends, flanges, collars, open ends and welded caps. State the thread standard or flange dimensions, sealing face, gasket or O-ring location, mating component and critical tolerances.
Reference photos help communicate the concept, but the final connection must be controlled by a drawing.
Available Cartridge Configurations

Typical Industrial Functions
Process filtration
Porous metal cartridge used for particle retention in liquid or gas process equipment.
Polymer or viscous-media filtration
Rigid metal media considered where temperature, pressure and cleanability requirements justify it.
Catalyst or solids recovery
Retention duty where a reusable metal element and defined cleaning method are required.
Protective filtration
Equipment-specific element protecting downstream components from process contamination.
For a non-sintered cylindrical construction, compare custom stainless steel filter tubes. For increased area in a compact envelope, review pleated filter cartridges.
Sintered Cartridge Selection Workflow
1. Define retention
State the contaminant, target rating and acceptance definition.
2. Select the medium
Choose mesh laminate, fiber felt or powder from flow, pressure and cleaning needs.
3. Define the body
Provide material, OD/ID, length, support and flow direction.
4. Detail interfaces
Specify threads, flange, sanitary end, caps, seals and tolerances.
5. Complete the RFQ
Add operating conditions, cleaning method, drawing, quantity and required documents.
Sintered Metal Filter Cartridge FAQ
It is a cylindrical filter element made from a porous metal medium that has been bonded by sintering. The medium may be multilayer woven wire mesh, metal fiber felt or porous metal powder; these are different structures and should be specified separately.
No. They differ in pore structure, permeability, mechanical behavior, dirt-holding characteristics and fabrication options. The required retention, pressure drop, cleaning method and service conditions determine the appropriate medium.
Provide the medium type, material grade, filtration rating and definition, outside and inside diameter, length, support structure, flow direction, end connection, seal details, tolerances, operating conditions, cleaning method and quantity.
Drawing-based cartridges can be reviewed with threaded fittings, sanitary-style clamp ends, flanges, collars, open ends or closed ends. State the connection standard, mating dimensions and sealing requirement.
State whether the value is nominal, absolute or based on a named test. A micron number without a definition does not provide a complete acceptance criterion.
Many metal cartridges are selected for cleanability, but the suitable method depends on the medium, contaminant, geometry and process. State the intended backwash, ultrasonic, chemical or thermal cleaning method for review.
