Industrial Mesh Material

Welded Wire Mesh for Industrial Fabrication

Welded wire mesh is a rigid grid in which crossing wires are joined at every intersection. For a quotation-ready specification, define the material, clear opening or wire spacing, wire diameter, roll or panel dimensions, edge condition and any downstream fabrication.

Welded Wire Mesh at a Glance

Stable intersections

Each crossing is welded, helping the grid retain consistent spacing during handling and fabrication.

Rolls or panels

Format depends on material, wire diameter, opening and the dimensional requirements of the final part.

Multiple materials

Stainless steel, galvanized steel and low-carbon steel can be evaluated against the service environment.

Fabrication-ready

Mesh can be specified for cutting, forming, framing and integration into drawing-based components.

How to Specify Welded Wire Mesh

A complete specification should identify dimensions and terminology unambiguously. If you have a fabricated part, send the drawing with critical tolerances and interface details.

RFQ fieldWhat to stateWhy it matters
Material / gradeStainless grade, galvanized or low-carbon steelControls corrosion behavior, fabrication and cost
Opening or spacingClear opening or center-to-center spacing, in both directionsAvoids a common dimensional misunderstanding

Opening, Spacing and Wire Diameter

Clear opening is the unobstructed distance between adjacent wires. Center-to-center spacing is measured from the centerline of one wire to the next.

Clear opening = center-to-center spacing − wire diameter.

For rectangular mesh, specify both directions. Avoid giving only a trade name or mesh number when the dimensional definition is important.

Materials and Surface Options

Stainless steel

Often selected for corrosion resistance, cleanability and fabricated industrial components. Specify the exact grade required.

Galvanized steel

A zinc-coated option for general protection. State whether the coating route or coating condition is controlled by your specification.

Low-carbon steel

Suitable where corrosion resistance is not the primary requirement or where a subsequent finish is specified.

Supply Formats

  • Rolls: convenient for cutting and continuous use where the construction permits roll supply.
  • Flat panels: useful when flatness, handling or fixed dimensions are important.
  • Cut blanks: supplied to a defined outline for downstream assembly.
  • Fabricated components: drawing-based guards, frames, baskets, supports and formed parts can be reviewed.

Typical Industrial Uses

Machine guards

Rigid barrier panels and protective covers sized around machinery and access requirements.

Partitions and enclosures

Warehouse, equipment or process-area separation where visibility and ventilation are needed.

Support mesh

Structural backing or support layers used with other filter or screen media.

Baskets and trays

Drawing-based handling, washing, storage or processing components with controlled openings.

For fine particle separation, compare stainless steel woven wire mesh and Dutch weave filter mesh. For sheet-based openings and higher section rigidity, see perforated metal mesh.

Welded Mesh Selection Workflow

1. Define the function

Guarding, support, containment, screening or a fabricated component.

2. State the geometry

Clear opening or spacing, wire diameter, overall dimensions and tolerances.

3. Select the material

Match grade and finish to corrosion, cleaning, temperature and fabrication.

4. Add fabrication details

Edges, bends, frames, holes, handles, mounting features and drawing references.

5. Confirm commercial details

Quantity, packing requirements and any documents explicitly required by the order.

What to Send for a Useful Quotation

  • Material and grade
  • Clear opening or center spacing in each direction
  • Wire diameter
  • Roll, panel or finished-part dimensions
  • Edge, finish and fabrication requirements
  • Operating environment and intended function
  • Quantity and drawing, where available

Providing these details reduces assumptions and makes technical review more efficient.

Welded Wire Mesh FAQ

Welded wire mesh is a grid made from longitudinal and transverse wires joined at each intersection. The welded joints hold the opening geometry more rigidly than a comparable woven mesh, making the product useful for guards, supports, cages, partitions and fabricated components.

State the material, clear opening or center-to-center spacing, wire diameter, roll or panel dimensions, edge condition, surface finish, quantity and any cutting, bending, framing or welding required. A drawing is preferred for fabricated parts.

No. Clear opening is the free space between adjacent wires. Center-to-center spacing includes one wire diameter. The relationship is: clear opening = center spacing minus wire diameter.

Welded mesh is joined at every intersection and is generally more rigid and dimensionally stable. Woven mesh is interlaced and is usually preferred when finer apertures, greater flexibility or filtration-specific weave structures are required.

The appropriate format depends on wire diameter, opening, material and final geometry. An RFQ can request rolls, flat panels or drawing-based parts such as guards, frames, baskets and support components, subject to specification review.

Choose the grade from the actual service medium, moisture, chlorides, cleaning chemicals, temperature, fabrication and service-life requirement. Grade 316 or 316L may provide an advantage in some chloride-bearing or welded applications, but suitability must be reviewed case by case.
